This unique perspective means that design conversations tend to go differently when a DT is in the room. But we know from experience that a good designer can turn any tool into an instrument of exploration. Some of us use Sketch to build infographics; some of us mock up apps using Keynote; I even know of one guy who made a video game out of an Excel spreadsheet. When you know how the tool works, and how to use it well, you can use it however you like. The key is to place design goals above commonly accepted standards of the tool’s limitations.
Preparation for the Major
After you apply, the financial aid office will determine your financial need and inform you of the federal or private loans that are available to you. As an applicant, you will be automatically considered for several USC Rossier scholarships ranging from $15,000 to $20,000. There is no need to submit a separate application for these scholarships. The admission committee selects recipients based on academic achievement, demonstrated dedication to the USC Rossier mission and other characteristics.

This is wonderful as it creates many efficiencies in bringing a product to market, but in practice I have seen a fairly mixed bag of experience-levels and design understanding in these developers. Many of these developers just do not have the interest and background to be strong front-end developers. This ensures that the global UI stays current and that the presentational code footprint that needs to be maintained and pushed over to the user remains small.

It was a very exciting experience to spearhead the system and advocate for its use across the company, especially when developers enjoyed building products with the system’s tools. I could see teams start to explore more innovative ideas and worry less about production or implementation minutia. In a sentence, design technologists are designers with front-end development skills.
Design Technologists: Front-End Development in the Design System Era
Often times a show-stopping potential exception is not identified until it is being built in Engineering and the design must be sent back to the proverbial, and literal, drawing board. Design Technologists will make sure that exceptions and engineering impact will be considered throughout the design process and the resultant design will be all the better for it. Design Technologists serve as a bridge between design and engineering.
Although some are concerned about the impact technology has on employment, history shows us that technological advancements have consistently increased the number of jobs. A calculator is worth nothing without a human being who is on a mission to solve a problem and knows the overall thought process it takes. For example, AI needs people who know how to ask the right question and then evaluate the result and frame the question in an even more specific way. Design technologists often are found at companies that have a design system and design system component library. They may serve as a champion for the design system component library, helping teams to adopt the library in their own projects or even contributing new components to the component library.
Helping students afford their college dreams
We bring an engineer’s pattern thinking to systematizing designs and a designers eye for fit and finish and empathy for a user’s needs. Design Technologists have an expertise that combines traits of a great designer and a great engineer. We have advanced knowledge of one or more digital delivery mediums but also a strong basis in UX, visual, and motion design.
If there is no additional enrollment space for a specific year, change of major applications will not be considered. The next application date will be for consideration of admission for the Spring Quarter 2024. Students may not apply for admission to Design Media Arts more than two times during their residency at UCLA.
The deliverables for those projects would always be in some static design tool, which at the time was either Photoshop or the now-defunct Fireworks. Years of frustration mounted trying to understand why my pixel-perfect designs never ended up representing the final product. Design technologists merge design with technology to enhance user experiences.
Design technologists help create this library of ready-to-use elements. When new components are ready, we embed with development teams to see how they work, and then fix the parts that don’t. They create a scaleable system that ensures that the button spacing is always perfect, automatically. Designers can easily create designs for a new product or new workflow for an existing product, but how do they know if its the right design and something that's feasible to build for the web? Design technologists can work in a prototyping capacity, collaborating closely with designers to build out a new UI feature in code. A prototype can be created to help designers visualize what a design will look like on the web, allowing them to explore multiple ideas.

Treating a Design Technologist as just a skilled pair of hands leaves a lot of potential creativity on the table. Design Technologists are at our best reporting into a design organization, working directly with the rest of the Design team. This can be challenging since users today expect both at the same time. They want easy-to-use digital experiences that perform complex tasks at scale. The core focus of a design technologist role is usually to serve as a liason (or "glue", if you like analogies) between design and engineering teams. Since designers and engineers, even those in front-end engineering roles, often come from very different backgrounds and have different skill sets, there is often a gap in understanding between these two roles or teams. A design technologist is a designer who can bridge the gap between visual design, user experience design, and engineering. These designers are comfortable using the tools native to the web to express design intent.

A design technologist fills this gap by bringing the UX and visual design expertise directly to the product-development process. Instead of working in static design tools, the designer can instead iterate in code and work side-by-side with developers. Real code prototypes help surface UX friction points earlier and aid in communicating design intent faster.
Prototypes may also get created to help make sure that a UI feature will be performant, intuitive, and accessible, or even to serve as a UI to use for user testing by UX researchers. The fidelity of the prototype also varies quite a bit, depending on how it will be used. This toolset allows the designer to build prototypes that can be tested and iterated upon in the real medium, which allows for faster validation of design concepts, and higher efficiency product development. The designer can also explore different approaches and flows, and run experiments against those ideas rapidly and efficiently. Design technologists are a relatively new role in the software engineering world, and there is often lots of confusion over where the position fits on a development team — are they a designer or a programmer?
